We built the thing the bookkeeper kept asking for.
Nightclose, Inc. is a small, self-funded software company. We build AI agents for back-office jobs that are rule-heavy, boring, and done by exhausted humans on a deadline.
The origin story, briefly
Our first user is a bookkeeper who handles nine entities for a small firm. Every month she told the same story: the software already does the accounting fine — it's the matching that eats the week. Bank feed on one screen, ledger on the other, and three days of deciding which wire fee explains which variance. The tools she tried either auto-matched with no explanation (so she re-checked everything anyway) or flagged everything (so she ignored all of it).
What she actually wanted was narrow and specific: match what clearly matches, and for everything else, hand me a draft with a reason. Nightclose is that, generalized — a matching engine whose exceptions arrive as journal entries a human can approve in minutes instead of a queue a human has to investigate from zero.
What we are
- A software product company — we sell subscriptions to a hosted tool. We are not an accounting firm, bookkeeping service, agency, or consultancy. We don't do your books; we make the software that does the matching.
- Bootstrapped and revenue-committed: the beta is free, the paid plans are real and dated on this site.
- AI-native in the practical sense: language models do the merchant-reasoning and the plain-English explanations; deterministic matching does the arithmetic. Neither is asked to do the other's job.
Who uses it
Bookkeepers, fractional CFOs, and controllers at companies of 5–100 people — the people who own the close and spend most of it on matching, not judgment. Individuals running one entity run Nightclose themselves; firms run it across a client list.

How we got here
-
The spreadsheet that started it
A matching script written for one bookkeeper's nine entities. It caught a duplicate charge in its first week; she asked if it could just draft the entry too.
-
From script to service
Plaid feeds and a QuickBooks connection replace CSV-by-email. The exception queue — draft entry plus reason — takes its current shape.
-
Public beta
Hosted app opens to a beta group of bookkeepers and controllers: unlimited entities, free while we harden the Xero path and the merchant-learning loop.
-
Hardening for launch
Payroll and expense-card reconciliation, firm-wide merchant rules, and the reviewer worklist. Paid plans arrive with a year of match history behind them.
