Nightclose Start free

Frequently asked questions

Is Nightclose free right now?
Yes — everything is free during the public beta: unlimited entities, feeds, and drafts. When we launch paid plans, beta accounts keep 50% off for 12 months. Nothing charges without a card on file, and no card is required to join.
Will Nightclose post to my books without asking?
Never, unless you turn it on. By default the accounting connection is read-only plus draft-create: Nightclose proposes a journal entry, and nothing becomes a real entry until you approve it. Auto-post for high-confidence matches is an opt-in per entity, and every auto-posted entry is listed with the reason it was posted.
What do you do with my bank and accounting credentials?
Bank and card access runs through Plaid read-only; we receive transactions, never your login. The QuickBooks/Xero connection is scoped to read plus creating drafts — it can't delete an entry, change the chart of accounts, or touch a closed period. Tokens are encrypted at rest, and you can revoke in your own console at any time; revoking stops the nightly run.
What if my bank isn't on Plaid?
Import a statement CSV or OFX — the matcher doesn't care where the lines came from, and you can save an upload routine per entity. Firms with the same handful of banks tend to standardize on this. Business-banking feeds we do support directly include Mercury, Brex, and Ramp.
How does the "reason" on each exception get written?
In two layers. The match itself is deterministic: exact amounts, dates within tolerance, saved merchant aliases, invoice references. A language model then reads the surrounding context — merchant name, counterparty, recent history — and writes the plain-English explanation and the draft accounts. The math never depends on the model; only the wording and the suggested coding do, and you can recode anything.
What happens when I correct a draft?
That's a lesson. Correct the account or the reason and the merchant is saved against your choice, so the same charge auto-ties next month. Merchant rules can be shared across a firm's entities, which is what most beta firms set up first.
Does Nightclose handle multi-currency or accrual conversions?
Reconciling a single currency is the product today, including fee-netting on payouts. Multi-currency bank feeds and foreign-exchange gain/loss drafting are on the roadmap and not yet honest to promise; accrual-basis conversions (prepaid expenses, deferred revenue) are on the roadmap too. Nightclose reconciles what's in your books; it doesn't book your whole close.
Why not just use the matching screen in QuickBooks or Xero?
Because their matchers stop at exact amounts and today's date, and both punt anything unusual into "add by hand" with no explanation. They also can't see across sources — your Stripe payout, your card feed, and your ledger are three different screens. Nightclose's whole value is the exceptions: the 7 lines that don't tie, already reasoned about and drafted.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Export every match, exception, and draft as CSV any time. On cancellation we delete connection tokens immediately and transaction history within 30 days. Details in the privacy policy.
I run a firm with 30+ client entities. Can you see me?
That's Firm+, in pilot now — one worklist across the client list with per-entity close calendars and staff roles. Email [email protected] with the subject "Firm+ pilot".
